Alton Brown

  • Mar. 29th, 2008 at 3:18 PM
Happy
We just got back from the Alton Brown 'lecture' (was sorta like a talk/question&answer) that was over at Walker School. Bought two of his books: Gear for your Kitchen and I'm Just Here for the Food v2.0, and both are signed. The one thing he had to talk about to start things off are 10 key points from his "Ab's Practical Guide to Coking and Eating Planet Earth". Wasn't sure what to expect, but.. in true Alton form it's hilarious while being practical and true. This wasn't just a straight lecture, but he'd go to one of his points, then ramble on, taking audience input, etc.

1) Food is delicious
-- Mostly how the trend lately is to put so much spicing and seasoning on something you can't even taste what you are actually eating.
--Get out of the way of the food.
--Don't mess it up.

2) Hunger is the best sauce. (Cervantes quote)
-- Eat when you're hungry. Doesn't sound like much, but.. you'll find you and your family are less picky about your food when you are hungry.
-- Wasn't mentioned, but cutting back on 'snacks' would probably help with this.

3) Chickens don't have fingers.
-- Fast food is crap and avoid it if you can help it at all.
-- A lot was mentioned about picky kids, or "Food Terrorists" as he likes to call them.
-- Soylent Green isn't people, it's CHICKEN FINGERS!
-- Joke but true, if you want your kids to stop eating stuff like that, then go down and show them what it's made of... that nasty part of the chicken that's under the breast with a huge sinew running through it.
-- Lots on parents being responsible for teaching their kids how to eat properly. If you start them on fast food/junk food, soon that's all they want.
-- Best way to get a young kid/toddler to try real food? DENY them. I think he said "No, you can't have this.. it's ADULT food. It's too sophisticated for YOU." And believe me stuff like that works.
-- Good food isn't cheap, but isn't your FAMILY worth it? What's more important then them? Very little if anything.

4) Water... Isn't that the stuff that comes out of faucets?
-- Water bottles are filling the landfills. ((use google earth if you don't believe it))
-- Get cheap filters and just use tap water.
-- The true allure of water is that it DOES taste different everywhere you go.
-- Yes, you can sometimes BLEACH clothing in the sink with Atlanta water, but that's why you get the filters.

5) Ronald McDonald isn't your mother.
-- Take responsibility for the food you and your family eat.
-- Apparently new york is looking to outlaw/ban trans fat. ((WTF? I need to look this up but don't doubt it's true.))

6) Want Chinese chili? Go to China.
-- Watch what you buy. All that effort to get that imported stuff to you does hurt the environment. A small effort of trying to buy as local as possible is something you can do to help.

7) Get a life, not a diet.
-- Diet is from the greek word meaning 'way of life' or something along those lines.
-- Use your diet as a barometer for your life. If it's bad, then you need to take a look at your life and make a change. Makes sense, if you're eating crap all the time because you're stressed out and feel like you don't have the time, then you need to find that stress and work on it.

8) Draw a circle on a map and eat of of it. The smaller the circle the better.
-- Kinda like number 6, eat locally.
-- Go to farmer's markets, join a co-op, do what you can.
-- Organic doesn't mean anything. People pay for the label, no real restrictions or requirements.

9) Be thankful from time to time.
-- Remember that steak you're eating was once a cow, that a chicken gave up it's life for that chicken alfredo you're consuming, a farmer worked hard to raise the plants. This isn't to make you guilty, but.. a reminder that food doesn't magically appear on the shelf, doesn't get constructed from thin air in the restaurant kitchen.

10) Eat more lawyers.

After he was done with the points, he opened up the floor for a more Question and Answer session. Here's some of the things I remember/wrote down on my phone.

-- Eating with your family is important.
-- Food's power is the ability to bring people together. It's one of the two things that people the world over always like doing in groups: eating and laughing. Face it, when was the last time you ENJOYED eating alone?
-- Almost as important as eating together is cooking together. Bring your entire family in the kitchen if you can. A new thing for fathers to do with their kids now isn't so much the 'woodshop' and 'working in the garage', but cooking. Don't be scared for your kids. If you 'protect' them so much they don't know their way around the kitchen, then the kid's screwed. People get hurt, but you learn the most and the longest from getting hurt.
--tip for college students: try making/joining 'food clubs'. Plan meals together, pool your money to buy in bulk. This is a great idea if you think about it. ((also takes care of that pesky 'eating alone' problem))
-- If you want to avoid store bought baby food, be careful of just taking what you normally eat and throwing it in blender. Often adults will be on a 'low salt, low fat' diet, which is actually BAD for kids. Even with children, don't forget that their growing bodies NEED that extra stuff to grow properly. The key is to make sure that the food they get is BALANCED.

For anyone intrested in the Georgia Ren fest... right now they have a deal going on that that sorta ends at 4pm today. CLICK HERE to see the details.

If you take out the $40 for discounted costume rental, it's still a value of $100. So you're getting a $100 bucks of stuff for $74.95 (after today it will be $84.95, still cheaper than at the door).

Thanks to [info]headmaster for reminding me that it was coming up. Since my mom will be visiting soon, I was thinking of taking her, but I don't know how her knees will hold up. I'll have to ask her.

Relax....

It's finally over...

It was great seeing all my friends again: Lee & Denise, Nathan & Mint, Brad, Vlad, Ian and the other AMV creators. But right now it's good that my shoulder has stopped hurting. Everything was going great until I dragged Quu away for dinner friday night... we got back in time to find that the shit hit the fan while we were gone. *sigh* From then on my stress level spiked and stayed pretty high the whole con. It mostly settled in my upper right shoulder area and refused to leave. Quu, Nigel and Walter worked on it but it just refused to completely go away.

Probably the most fun I had was during Iron Chief. I got to run the computer while Greggo and the panelist had fun. Greggo ran a cool "Name this anime" during the contest and it was a blast.

Both the Pajama party and the KOR party were wonderful, though I was so exhausted at the KOR party that I couldn't stay long. *sigh* Oh well...

Now we've got Raymond staying with us for 2 months and hopefully he won't get too bored. I'm also having to back up the digisubs onto the Master computer so that patrick can move thigns around. B-ko is going to become the "playback" machine while the current digisub will get some updates and then become the house "file server" and will store all the digisubs, Manga, MP3s, Program Instillation files, etc.. I'm also having to get caught up on my downloads.. All of Loki is subed! Yippiee!!

OH well.. more later..

Oh Yippiee!!!

This past weekend was Saltare, my favorate event of all time! Here's a rundown on what happened:

FRIDAY
Work was slow and borning. I was the only one here, with Susan sick and Lynne having tests done. Cause Celesta and I never decided on what to do, I didn't eat lunch. Oh well. At least I had leftovers from the Grand Rounds that morning. Bagles, Fruit, OJ, etc...

Oh well.. after work I went home and packed hurridly. Called Arwen and ran over to pick her up. We swung by McDonalds (Chicken Nuggets are Perfect for on-the-road eating!) on our way out of town and were on our way by 7:00pm.

The trip was pretty uneventful, with a stop for gas along the way but not much else. The only rather exciting thing that happened was that just north of Birmingham there was a detour that took us WAY ouf of the way then we missed our turn to get on the expressway. *sigh* But all in all, we made it to the hotel by 11:30pm. Fortunatly Tatiana was in the room so we could unload our stuff, but they had given our roomkey to Caedmon for some odd reason. So we headed up to the Hospility Suite to find Caedmon and Todd and anyone else still awake to say hello.

When we got up to the suite, we found Todd, Caedmon, Master William, Bill-the-Cat, Doc, and all sorts of others. Arwen and I sat down, chatted a bit, then eventually got our room key and headed back to the room and crashed.

It was funny, for as tired as we all were, we stayed up chatting in the dark. The funniest thing was that Tatiana couldn't get to sleep. I ended up calling up to Caedmon's room to tell Todd this. It was all to funny.

In the End, we all fell asleep.

Saturday

Woke up bright and early! NOT! I dragged my butt outta bed saturday morning, don't really remember the time. *sigh* Needless to say it was well in time for my 10:30 class. First on the list? Begining Italian Dance.

What the schedule failed to mention, much to my delight, was that this was Beginning 16th Century Italian Dance! Yippiee! Dances I didn't know! It was soo much fun, even though we spent the entire time on like two dances. Oh it was soo fun. Next was the Intermediate Italian class which, truth be told, I should have skipped. *sigh* It had Gallards (the jumpie steps). Tatiana twisted her ankle, so she and Todd got out of it. But the next day I paid the price. Oh well. Anyway, where was I? oh yea... second class... Well.. we all made it through. The third class was by Master Saun and was fun. One of the dances we learned has "Scurring" in it and the guys just had a lot of fun with it. Needless to say our group of dancers suddenly started laughing and the other dancers couldn't figure out why. Tee hee

Next came lunch.

A group of us decided to eat there at the hotel resturant, which turned out to be a very bad decision. The waitress was scatterbrained and downright rude and they even got our orders all mixed up. Most of us ended up being late for our last class, which was Phillip's Advanced English Country Dance (ECD). I went down there and was the oddball out and they were dancing something I already knew. In fact all of them I knew so I basically skipped it.

Dinner we walked up to Ruby Tuesdays which was fairly good. I forgot who all went, I know Tatiana, Todd, Caedmon, Julianna, Bill, Master William and a few others went. We filtered out and headed back to get ready for the ball, which was really nice. I managed to get my red dress done in time and it looked good. Bill-the-Cat has pictures somewhere. Maybe I'll get them and upload them to the gallery one day.

The next morning we had brunch at the bagel shoppe that was across the street before heading out. It was fun being able to say hello and whatnot, but because I had to get Julanna back to Memphis we had to bug out of there fairly quickly. The drive back was uneventful to my memory and Fighter Practice was ok.

Samhain 2001

Here is the Knight Marshal's report from the battles at Samhain. Caedmon had posted it to the greyniche email list.
It was a cold October morning on a high mountain pass in the Carpathians when a patrol of Count Vladimir came across a scouting party for an invading Turkish army. Count Vladimir's forces quickly set upon the Turks, driving them into retreat with a determined attack. They pursued the fleeing Turks for some distance, until finally the invaders managed to regroup and fight a pitched battle upon a high mountain plateau. The groups clashed and withdrew time and again until it became apparent that the invading Turks could not hope to overcome the Count's forces there. The Turks reteated towards the river hoping to make a stand at the bridge, but many were slaughtered before they could reach it. It was here, however, at the so-called "River of Blood," that the Sultan's reinforcements arrived by ship to harry the Count's men on the bridge and land troops across the river behind the forces of Dracul. Stunned by the sudden arrival of the Sultan's reinforcements, Vlad's Men were forced to withdraw to a nearby mountain fortress whereupon a great siege commenced. While the Turks distracted the Count's men with a vicious frontal assault upon the gate, sappers created a breach in the east wall. The Sultan's army poured into the castle, and a bloody battle took place in the courtyard. With their backs pressed up against the wall and no more retreat possible, Count Vladimir's knights and en-at-arms set themselves against the invading host, and with great ferocity slew the Turks to the man. Some say that the Lord Dracul himself did manifest in the courtyard from a mist to impale the invaders upon long pikes with a supernatural ease. Other, more reliable sources tell us that the great Tar Radu - King of distant Meridies - happened to be a guest at the castle and turned the tide in favor of Vladimir. The truth is lost in the haze of history, for we know that not long afterwards, Count Vladimir - frustrated with the bickering of petty nobles - locked them inside this castle and burned to the ground, along with all written accounts of the battle.

"Yes, Vampires are Period!"

Friday

I went into work early so I could leave early. I got home a little after 4pm and packed. Took a shower, called Juliana at about 5:30 or so I think. I finished packing the car (and unpacking it) before driving over and getting her. Had to stop by the Exxon station to get batteries and something to drink for the weekend.

By 7:00 pm we were on the road. I got to site late, and fortunately ran into Ebo who pointed out where everyone was camped. We ended up being behind Orphelia, Aethrick, Reagen, Zhara and a few others.

Not much happened that night.. it was soo cold. Spent time up in the Main hall chatting with people before going with Ebo and Genevra down to Doc and Genevra's tent. They had a space heater set up in their tent and it was probably the warmest place on site. A fairly big group was down there: Doc, Genevra, Todd, Caedmon, Ebo, James(?), Kate and a couple that I've met but don't know their names. Eventually Ambrose and Aethrick showed up. All in all it was fun, though when the party in the tent broke up I was not too happy for reasons I won't go into here.

From there I went to Hamish's fire pit and stayed there till 1:30 am when I finely crashed. I found out Magnus the Black is now a free agent. He's such a sweetie. Oh well...

Saturday

Woke up to a freezing tent.. YUCK! We stayed in our blankets until 9:00 am and the tent was somewhat warm. I got up, went to the main hall, had some coffee then went to Carl's "Vlad the Impaler" class. It was very interesting. Covered the history of the region and exactly the circumstances he ruled under. Needless to say it ran over. Diaminio's "History of the Vampire" class was after that which was really neat too.
After that class I ran into the Kitchen to help with lunch.. I was soo late. I should have been there an hour earlier. I stayed there through lunch and a little afterwards, only leaving when I had to go move the Loaner Garb out of the hall.

I was so tired that I went back to the tent and crashed for an hour before court was to start. It was an hour late, then lasted 3 hours! Some memorable events:
  • Kat the Strange was taken as a protegee
  • Linnet took a protegee
  • Genevra was apprenticed by Mistress Vashti
  • A hand full of people joined Irish Keep (including Simon and Amelia)
  • House Dragon's Bower was added to (Gerald, Luca, and Catronia I think)
  • Caedmon got his Denial (yet still doesn't have his Estoile), along with Asling
  • Catronia, Lucca, Nim, all got Estoiles and AOAs
  • Arwen got an Estoile
  • Diana got the Order of the Cignet
  • Baron Gillimero died from a grievous wound he received at the Three Rivers War, causing our beloved Baroness to go into shock and totally forget who she was and where she was. She reverted back to her native tongue left to return to her chateau, leaving us with out leadership. The Wise Women were called forth who stated that the best person to consult to lead our barony after such tragic happenings. She accepted the grave responsibility to become Baroness of Grey Niche.

I don't remember much else happening, though there was lots. Eventually feast got started and it was rather good. A food fight with the grapes ensued between our table and Roderick's. After a brief interlude for me just before the first remove All was a good evening. Had lost more uncolato drink and flurted up a storm. I left rather early and crashed a bit before the ball.

The ball was fun. First dance was the Hole in the Wall, and at first it looked like I was going to have to sit it out cause all the guys who said they wanted to dance with me already had partners...
at least Corwin was standing there and I grabbed him. :-) Danced with Ambrose for the most part, once or twice with Hamish. Got to dance John Tallowswith Brandr and Amrosowith Ebo (Who's really improved!!). Caedmon actually asked me to dance Rostobilli(since i was the one who requested it and one of the few people who knows how to dance it). I messed up the first part, but felt better when he messed up the verse. *laugh*

I left with Celesta during the final dance (Trenchmore) cause I was the only one who knew how to light the heater Bill loaned us. I got back after it was over. Hung around for a bit, then started meandering. I finely went up to the hall and amassed a troupe to go wandering. We finely ended up at a fire down near Shadow Legion (who was all asleep!). I think we stayed there till 3 am when the fire was dying down. It was still going, but was down to the embers and just kinda smoldering. We decided to head up to the hall and check the fire there.

As soon as we got there I took over the fire and was able to make it all but roar. *grin* Yes, I amthe Fire Goddess! We stayed there till almost 5 am. Poor Ambrose suffered from my mounting rage and I really ripped into him. I need to apologize to him. :-( Eventually I passed out without doing any bodily damage to anyone.

Sunday

Dawn broke and all was frozen through out the land. The heater had gone out and we were freezing. Celesta was up and out before 8am and I didn't get out till almost 10 I think.. All I knew was that sleeping didn't help and I needed to get offsite ASAP. We packed up the car and I gave Waffle back his picture and air mattress, showing the picture off to everyone I came across. *grin*

After grabbing the last of the loaner garb we went down to see Roderick and company packing up. We waited around, helped a bit (Juliana more than me, who was pretty much good for nothing), then they and Hamish followed us to the Wendy's for lunch before they left town.

Afterwards I dropped Juliana off then went home to sleep.

So that was the event. Not much, but enough.

Man... I really left all the good stuff out of that last post, but then I still haven't recovered yet. Anyway...

There were a few things that happened during the event that I forgot to post:
-William gave new meaning to a "Chocolate Wiz Way" (if you don't get it then ask)
-Arwen can eat chocolate pudding with chopsticks
-Diamino told us the Emu Video story...
-I now will probably never be a Laurel since I've got enough marks against me to last three lifetimes. ;-) Not that it breaks my heart or anything (I see visions of yellow somewhere in my future despite my best attempts to avoid it.)

There's more but I can't remember it at the moment. Look at this post later to see if I add anything to it.

Tourney of the Foxes

ARG! I though I had posted last Friday but I think my computer ate it.. oh well...

I went to Foxes this weekend.. and boy was it good to go to an event. Arwen and I left town around 5:30 pm and we got into Nashville around 8:30 pm to meet Roderick and his GF for dinner. That was a blast. It was soo good to see them again. Apparently Gladenfield has moved the date of their 12th Night so it doesn't conflict with ShadowCon anymore! YIPPIEE!

The event was good, take a look at my pictures from this weekend http://www.thesilverphoenix.com/gallery.htm
Getting there was almost as much as an adventure as being there. After nearly falling asleep behind the wheel I stopped at a gas station and got some Mountain Dew and Vivrian. BIG MISTAKE. By the time we pulled into site I had the shakes and didn't realize I had ODed on Caffeine. (I wasn't popping them like candy, just took the recommended dosage, but forgot NOT to drink soda or the like!) I had the shakes and combined with travel weariness I was just down for the count. We met up with Jennet and Ben at the BP just north of Chattanooga, which was interesting. I didn't know they were going.
Then after we got there I somehow managed to get the tent up despite not being in my right mind (ok I'm never in my right mind but you get the point!). Poor Caedmon nearly got his head bitten off a few times I was so snappish. *sigh* Sorry Babes... But that wasn't the worst thing. There was a group camped a little ways away who were up all night drumming and shouting "Okra" or something dumb like that. I was NOT in the best of moods so when I looked at my watch and it said 2:30 Central time (which is 3:30 EASTERN!) I grabbed my jeans and somehow managed to stay civil while telling them to shut up. I'm still surprised at how I pulled that off.

After a few more hours of good sleep (Thank God I did go and get an air mattress!) I was ready and raring to go the next day. The fighting was fun and our team, Arielle's Atomic Attack Amoeba, tied for second place. The Rapier team did excellent and did a 7-0 clean sweep! Huzzah!

For lunch Master William, Arwen and I went into Trenton and had Chinese. Unfortunately my "event-ly disaster" chose to me my transmission acting up. I had hoped that it was just low on fluid, but I'm thinking I've lost either first and/or second gear. *sigh* Cars hate me.

I managed to go swimming that afternoon after finishing watching the fighting.. that was fun. Then I took an afternoon nap while waiting for feast to finish. William came back early and we went to eat at the little diner just down the road. He had felt bad that he had come up to the event specifically to see Arwen and I and we didn't get feast. So eventually we made it back to site and when feast was over we all walked back to the hall for the dance.

I've helped tear down many a hall after feast and can tell you I've never seen one get cleaned up and broken down this fast in my entire life. I think everyone else was saying the same thing (including those who've been in the SCA for pretty much my ENTIRE LIFE). But they waited to start the dancing for over an hour after we tore everything down so most everyone had left. :-p

After we finished dancing we went on the porch and sat there talking. There was Aeorin, Artemis, Diamino, William, Caedmon, Arwen and myself. (sorry about the misspellings guys, just let me know) It was such fun!

Sunday morning I think we got off site by 10, then got lost because Caedmon and Diamino made a wrong turn and Bill and I made the mistake of thinking they knew where they were going. (Remember that my transmission is acting up and we're in the mountains...) Then we got lost again by trying to find the Cracker Barrel outside Chattanooga. (That was an hour long detour in and of itself!) Eventually we made it to CB and got food.

I forgot when we finely got on the road, but we made it back into Memphis at 6:30 pm with only a couple of stops and only one really trouble spot (just outside Chattanooga I thought I was smelling smoke and knew it was acting weird. But once we were out of the mountains it was doing much better.)

That's all I can think of for now. I'm hoping Topcities will straighten itself out.. it's being VERY slow in loading the pages today...

In the Beginning

Well.. this is my first entry. Let's see how this goes.

I'm happy about a couple of things: I just found out yesterday that my site has gone up in the ranks at Camelot Dreams. I've progressed from my team fighting to the main fighting at The Roundtable. Looking at last weeks scores for the winners, I stand a really good chance at winning that one too. This is totally unexpected and has helped my mood this past week or so. My site is an extension of me, hence why I'm putting this journal up. Anyway...

I'm also happy because my masquerade partner just sent me a few cards and some kewl stuff. Take a look at the site s/he's prepared for me: http://mysteryone.freeservers.com/ I think I'll be adding a separate page for all the stuff. It's getting a little big to be adding to my team spirit page. I guess I could break up the spirit page and make a separate one for each team.... arg... I'll decided what to do later. I'm re-arranging things on my other pages right now anyway.

Let's see.. Lugh was yesterday. I didn't get there until late because the top of my bathing suit was blown off my balcony into the tree next to the apartment building (it's still there, too). Bill-the-Cat called in the afternoon wanting to know what happened... he picked me up and took me out there. At least I found one of my old one-piece suits. I'm glad Bill took me out there cause I had a blast at the event. The party at Corwin and Asling's house was wonderful. The pool was actually WARM! I think the best part was when I started wailing on Corwin with the "fun noodle". ;-) It was a sight to see.

Other things that happened at Lugh: Luca the Scared Cow of Grey Niche was voted Ms. Lugh, the Gunga Brothers Dave and Keith were both voted Mr. Lugh, as even our Mighty Baron couldn't tell them apart. (I've got pictures, once I get them developed I'll post them in the gallery.) Earl Sir Padruig won the Warlord Tourney, Burford won the "Iron's in the Fire" tourney, and the Baron of Three Rivers won the Wheel of Fire tourney. There was much shtick played up for the upcoming war with Three Rivers, included a archery target with the Grey Niche Arms on it, or at least what was supposed to be our Arms. Feast was great. Huzzah to Zarah for the excellent food!

I've got to get my notes up from my different events. DOH! That's the one page I've forgotten to transfer from my old site: The Further Adventures of Lady Lethann. *sigh* I'll get to that when I finish putting up everything else. Yes, I do end up working on this a lot, but for as much as I may complain, I love it. This is something I'm good at, really good at, and enjoy doing. Heck.. as I'm writing this entry, I'm working on my pages. :-) Multi-tasking is such fun!

Today is fighter practice. I think I'll take my "Lady of Shallot" to work on today.

Well.. I can't think of much else to say. Maybe I'll post more tonight.
