Girl Scout Council of Northwest Georgia Home Page:
I had a dream this morning about me being back in Girl Scout camp. It occurred to me in my sleep fogged mind after waking up that one of the things i could do to keep myself occupied was to possibly volunteer with the Girl Scouts. Used to love it and was so disappointed when I couldn't go from a Junior to a full Girl Scout (not enough in my area at the time). Maybe someone else out there might be interested in it as well.

Made it out there fine!

Have better directions to post later along with pictures.

Site is completely rustic. No water at all. There is a revine with possible dry creek bed, but no water we've found at all. About 12 camp sites total, but a few have not been used in so long they are not really useable. Others are trashed, probably by local kids. There is one site PERFECT for groups.

more later!

Alright, here is a bit more info (since I've been bitched about making too many posts before, I decided to just tack all this onto this post).

Update: I made a Google Map of how to get there, and where the good site is.

REAL DIRECTIONS:Read more... )
We went down the 955B road, and it looks to go up along the top of the mountain. At one point we were able to spot the good site where we had left the car. Pretty nifty. I -think- it's a big loop (there is a split), but we never made it to where it looped around. VERY VERY long, but a very nice hike. Were going to drive down the 955A road, but realized we never saw a place to turn around on the 955B area and thought better of it. Will just have to hike down it next time.

All in all, the place is really nice. It's kinda remote, but less than a half hour from town. However, there is absolutely NOT amenities. No water, no toilets, no anything. There are not platforms, only cleared spaces among the trees and crude stone firerings. The only BAD thing is that it's obvious that the local kids come out here to have wild beer parties and don't clean up after themselves. There is poison oak, didn't see any poison ivy or sumac, but it's far back in the trees. If you stay on the gravel roads, there isn't a problem. Or just keep your eyes out and pray you're not reactive to it. *crosses fingers*

In Calhoun, there are lots of gas stations, a CVS, an Eckards (near 75), and a Piggly Wiggly (near 75), pizza and a mexican restaurant. One exit south of 315 is a Home Depot and various fast food, not to mention an outlet shopping stripmall. It takes less than 2 hours to go from the campsite down to my house in Kennesaw, so honestly, if you NEED something, it's easy to get it.

If you plan on camping there, here are a few suggestions of things to take:Read more... )

More info!

Since I now know it's "John's Mountain", I was poking around google and found this site with this map. Going to seriously have to look around that site because it does say that there at least USED to be a waterpump. I doubt it's there though. Anyway, the awesome thing is that the " Keown Falls Scenic Area and Hike" is not too far away. On the map they have, the "Pocket Road" actually merges in with what is now the larger "Everett Springs Road" (one we do NOT go on to get to Hidden Creek) so it should be real easy to get there. There are also a few other sites/rec areas that should be around there. Will have to go looking when we all decide to go camping.

If you look up above, I went in to Google Maps and made a map of how to get there. Once I knew what I was looking for, the forest service roads just JUMPED out at me. Silly me. The Satellite view over on Yahoo shows the campsite SOO much better though. Google's is hard to see, but I was able to use both to get the lines on the Google Map to show right.
