Replacing this with the better writeup I had over on my Wordpress blog.

Yesterday I purchased my new 16gig iphone and was very happy to wave goodbye to my old Treo 650 which had lived long beyond it’s mileage. It wasn’t until late last night when I was playing around with my custom settings that I found out I couldn’t add my own custom ringtones. My friend informed me that Apple had set it up that you had to pay double through the itunes store in order to get them which greatly upset me.

This morning I decided to do a bit of research. My friend linked me a nice program that did all the snipping and importing of the songs for you, but it was a paid program with only a small taste test of what you could do. This was not pleasing to me. I am a music and ringtone junky. I love to have my friends each have their own ringtone so I know who’s calling with out even looking.

Unable to find anywhere that explained a simple way to do your own ringtones without paying for it, I tried multiple ways to get the ringtone into itunes, all without success. Finally broke down and tried the paid software demo. My hunch paid off and I found out what I needed.

1) Pick out your Source – I’ve got a pretty extensive library, but I want to make sure that the song is loud enough to jar my attention when it’s ringing, as well as clear enough to make out.

2) Edit your clip – Most songs start out soft or have a blank second or so in the front. That is not good for a ringtone. Most of my ringtones are around 20 seconds long, but I think you can go longer. Since I’m a PC person, I just use the free Wavepad from NCH Software.

3) Save your clip in M4A format – Most audio editors should be able to do this, or you can use a file converter. Switch from NCH Software is perfect if you need to do bulk conversions. There are also multiple online file converters. A good list is over on MakeUseOf.

4) Change extension to M4R – I just open up the folder I saved my ringtones to and edit it straight in the OS. Don’t worry about any warnings you get about it being possibly unusable.

5) Drag the M4R into iTunes – M4R is a useable format for iTunes so all you have to do is drag it into iTunes and it will add it to the Ringtones library. I’ve read before that it’s a good idea to add only one ringtone at a time or you might get multiples of the same ringtone rather than all of your different ones.

6) Sync your iPhone – You can now choose the custom ringtone from your list. Your overall ringtone is in the Settings/Sounds menu. If you edit your contacts directly you can assign custom ringtones for each one.

Yes folks, it’s as simple as that. As far as I know this should work for both PC and MAC users. I don’t think there is a limit on how many or how large your ringtones can be, but I’m not exactly sure so be careful with your experiments. Remember that your phone rolls over to voicemail after a certain time period so it’s pointless to make anything longer than that. Typically shorter ones will loop, but I haven’t tried it out myself just yet.

Enjoy!

UPDATE: After adding my other ringtones, the iphone itself is limited to carrying only 10 ringtones at once. Sad Leth. If someone finds out differently without jailbreaking their phone, please comment and let me know.

Cool, I thought I had remembered hearing that you couldn't set custom/individualized ringtones on the iPhone. It's good to know that once I finally break down and get one myself (probably in about a month I'm guessing) that I won't lose that capability (which my Blackjack I also has).

EDIT: as an amusing aside, my BJII does not like my animated dancing Guu icon. :p

It's in a funky place. you have to go to the contact and edit them. There is an option where you input their phone numbers. But, as I just found out, it will only hold a max of 10 custom ringtones. Better than nothing i guess.

Re: doesnt
I have a 3g and it works just fine. What exactly are you doing? You can't just rename an mp3 to m4r. it has to be converted to m4a first using a special program THEN renamed to m4r.

To change extentions in vista
1. Open a folder or open explorer
2. Click the Layout button (to the left of the Views button) as shown in the picture below
3. Click Folder Options
4. Click the View tab
5. Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types
6. Click OK

Re: To change extentions in vista
You know, I had forgotten this. If you don't show the extensions, renaming it to .m4r in vista just won't work because it still tacks on the old .m4a so it looks like "ringtone.m4r.m4a" to itunes.

This was one of the first options I changed in Vista. Detest not being able to change my extensions on the fly.

Online option
Thanks for the write up - it is definitely a good option, however I found this site:

http://www.makeownringtone.com/

It is pretty easy and has a lot of flexibility.

Re: Online option
This does NOT make them into .m4r files though. You will still need to convert the snipped portion to .m4a and rename to .m4r or it will not work on an iphone.

Re: its irking me
There could be many reasons. Check the time. I found out if they are too long they won't sync to the phone. They have to be properly encoded to. As I said...somewhere... you can't just rename an mp3 to m4r. You HAVE to CONVERT it to m4a then rename it to m4r.

If they are not showing up in itunes at all, try reconverting it using an online converter or with switch, linked above.

If they are showing up in the ringtones on itunes but not syncing to the phone itself, they are probably too long. Read the Wordpress write up as it has more updates there.

No Custom Ringtones Folder on iPhone
I have an iPhone 3G with software version 2.2. iTunes 8.0.2.20.

I have created ringtones as per instructions, the show in the ringtones folder and play. They show in the ringtones sync menu for my phone. They sync with my phone, but when I go into ringtones on my phone, all I get are the default ringtones - I don't get an option for Custom Ringtones.

Anybody know how I fix this?

Re: No Custom Ringtones Folder on iPhone
Are they too long? Remember they can only be a certain length. Also, make sure you have file extensions shown. If you don't, when you rename the files to .m4r you'll won't actually convert them, simply name them song.m4r.mp3.

Please check the wordpress link for more details. I'm still trying to retype the whole thing up.

did you rename it properly? Try listening to the ringtone in windows media player or some other player besides itunes. It could be that you just saved the same clip two times.

Be sure to check the new updated version of my tutorial that even includes a simple troubleshooting guide.
